Cyclone Biparjoy: An intense cyclonic storm by Faris Khaliq

Pakistan recently experienced a large storm that caused significant damage and disruption across the country. The storm brought heavy rainsstrong winds and hail to various parts of Pakistan, leading to flooding, road closures, and power outages. It is said that the nation has raised an alert for an extremely severe cyclonic storm dubbed Biparjoy. Indian Meteorological Department said in a statement that winds are surging to 150 kilometers (93 miles) an hour.

In Karachi, Pakistan’s largest city, the storm caused severe flooding of city streets and homes. The city’s drainage system was unable to handle the heavy rainfall, leading to waterlogging and inundation of many areas. The flooding also caused significant damage to property and infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and buildings. The storm also disrupted electricity and internet services in many areas. Power lines were damaged by strong winds, leading to prolonged outages in some parts of the country. This caused significant hardship for residents who rely on electricity for daily needs like cooking, refrigeration, and air conditioning.

In addition to the physical damage caused by the storm, it also led to several fatalities, at least 20 confirmed death cases reported died due to the storm, with many more injured people. The government has launched rescue and relief operations to help those victims, including evacuating people from flooded areas and providing emergency supplies. The storm serves as a stark reminder of the challenges posed by extreme weather events and the need for improved infrastructure and disaster preparedness. Experts have suggested improving the drainage system in cities like Karachi, as well as increasing investment in disaster risk reduction and response mechanisms.

The large storm in Pakistan highlights the importance of building resilient communities and investing in climate adaptation and mitigation measures. As the impacts of climate change become increasingly severe and frequent, it is critical to invest in measures that can help protect communities and prevent a worsening of the impacts.
