The Power of Habit review by Charles Duhigg

The power of habit book

The Power of Habit is an interesting book that talks about that what are habits of a person, organization, and society. This book not only focuses on work-related habits but also personal habits, therefore, it is ideal for all those who are curious in their lives whether it is personal or professional. In this book, we can know what are habits and how new habits will be developed. In this book 3 main points are covered, habits of individuals, habits of organization, and habits of society.

Habits of the individual:

What are the habits and how do they work? Scientist says habits emerge because the brain tries to make every routine a habit because habits help our brain to save energy. This habit of saving effort is advantageous for the brain. Charles says that once a habit will be established, then the brain doesn't take much time to decide that matter. At this time it takes rest or starts to work on some other task. What happens by itself you start to do any task without much thought. And this continues unless you deliberately change the habit. Habits are here to remain the same they don't go anywhere because they are deeply encoded in the brain. For forming new habits emphasizes the importance of having a sign or cue.

The habit of organization :

A Keystone habit is something that has the power to influence how we eat, play, live, spend money and communicate. Charles gives the example of the importance of Keystone habits and their ability to encourage a chain reaction. This is very helpful in organizations and business places. Keystone habit starts a process that over time, transforms everything.

The habit of society:

In any job, weak ties and acquaintances are often more important than strong friends. Weak relation gives us access to social networks where we don't belong. Weak ties acquaintances the people we meet once every six months are the ones who tell us about job openings we would not otherwise hear about. It is this power of weak ties that example fries which can transform a social group into a social protest movement. The social movement has the power to convince thousands of people.

Habits never truly disappear, they are within your brain's framework, ready to emerge when you call upon them. Habits can be just as damaging as they can be rewarding. Therefore, choose your habit wisely because your personality depends upon your chosen habits.
